One of the most impressive beaches on the island is Issos, a vast, virgin area with golden sands and huge dunes, elements that have identified the beach as the "Sahara of Corfu". Besides this, Issos is situated in a prime location in front of Lake Korission, which is the most important birdland on the island, accommodating exotic flamingos. From the northern part of the beach begins the famous cedar forest on a narrow strip of land between the lake and the sea. The forest ends at the nearby Chalikounas.
