Sustainability at Hacienda Xcanatun centres on protecting Yucatán’s wildlife, supporting local livelihoods, and making hospitality more inclusive. The hacienda works with regional producers and heritage artisans, while its resident coatis receive responsible care under the guidance of a biologist. Community initiatives also support young people, small-scale agriculture, and fair-trade craft traditions across the region.

Wildlife preservation
We are convinced that every species matters, and that caring for our natural wealth means protecting all of us. Our goal is to coexist with all the wildlife in Yucatán. A testament to this is the family of coatis that has grown within the hotel — a living symbol of the harmony and respect we strive to maintain with our surroundings.
Each individual we encounter receives careful and responsible attention, always under the guidance of an expert biologist. We invite you to get to know this unique and friendly species that inhabits the region, guided by our coati specialist, Jorge Luis Gil.
Committed to Mexican talent
Aware of our role as promoters of sustainable development, we actively support Yucatecan heritage artisans by acquiring mexican crafts and products, promoting ancestral traditions, and strengthening the regional economy.
Our commitment ranges from sourcing Melipona honey products that promote fair trade to choosing products with recyclable packaging.
Through these efforts, we contribute to a more sustainable future while celebrating and preserving Mexico’s cultural heritage.

Community clean-up initiatives
In alignment with our values of environmental responsibility and community engagement, we promote initiatives that contribute to the preservation and well-being of our surroundings in Xcanatún.
Through community clean-up activities, we bring together team members and local residents to collect waste and improve shared spaces.
These efforts encourage collective responsibility, raise environmental awareness, and contribute to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable community.
The living traditions of Yucatán
Yucatán’s cultural heritage comes to life through experiences that showcase the region’s music, dance, and traditions. Jarana performances offer an authentic connection to local identity while celebrating the stories and customs passed down through generations.
By creating spaces where these traditions can be shared and appreciated, we help preserve Yucatecan culture and encourage future generations to keep its legacy alive.
Smarter energy for a sustainable future
As part of our commitment to more responsible energy use, we have implemented a battery storage system that works like a large rechargeable battery. It stores energy when it is cleaner and more readily available, allowing us to use it later when the hotel needs more electricity. This helps us optimize energy consumption, reduce our reliance on polluting sources, and minimize our environmental impact.
Through this system, we have avoided an estimated 7.37 tons of CO₂ emissions, an environmental benefit comparable to planting 1,995 trees.*

Earth hour
From every corner of the world, global initiatives inspire us to live in harmony with nature. That is why we join Banyan Group’s worldwide activities, such as Earth Hour, an international movement celebrated each year on the last Saturday of March. During this symbolic hour, millions of people and organizations around the world turn off their lights as a gesture of environmental awareness and commitment to climate action.
In addition to this initiative, we also take part in various efforts such as Earth Day, International Women’s Day, World Tourism Day, and World Environment Day.
