Rooted in our corporate ethos of “Embracing the Environment, Empowering People’, Banyan Tree’s sustainability approach emphasizes on building in harmony with nature and contributing to the growth and development of the community where each of our hotels are planted. Cleaning Campaigns at Xcanatún Municipality
Our involvement with the community includes several additional activities, such as donating and planting trees in the park, caring for and cleaning the main road with our workers, and donating garbage bins for recycling and recollecting, among others.
“Mercadito Xcanatun” Local Market
Hacienda Xcanatun has partnered with local producers to promote sustainable commerce within our resort facilities. Every month we host a local market called “Mercadito Xcanatun,” where guests and the local public can find various handmade products. This initiative aims to support artisans from our community.
Mérida Refectory is a center that assists people in vulnerable situations.
Refectories offer lunches to more than 100 people a day. Being an NGO, they collect food provided by supermarkets, local markets, and donations from people.
One of its programs is the "independent living house," whose objective is to provide young people over 18 years of age with a support network so that they can fend for themselves. Likewise, they have laundry spaces, showers, haircuts, and educational workshops for the low-income community.
On the occasion of World Food Day, and as part of the sustainability objective Zero Hunger, our collaborators joined the work, participating in preparing food and subsequently serving it to visitors.
Green Imperative Fund
Hacienda Xcanatun is committed to the protection of our environment through solid principles of sustainability, such as the Green Imperative Fund (GIF), that operates from the contributions of $1 US dollar per night on behalf of each of our guests. The GIF is part of the corporate governance philosophy of Banyan Tree and Angsana. The hotel matches the donation amounts of the guests and the fund allocates its resources to several mechanisms of environmental protection in the communities where they operate, and such is the case of Hacienda Xcanatun. The guest is notified by means of a starfish he receives at check-out.
