Day 8 Explore the old fortress
The emblematic Old Fortress of Corfu town is one of the first things a visitor sees when approaching Corfu . It stands on the eastern side of the town, on a rocky peninsula that gets into the sea. This fortress was constructed by the Venetians in the 15th century on the site of a former Byzantine castle. The fortress was connected to the land by a movable, wooden bridge. In 1819, the British replaced this bridge with the present stable pathway, which is 60 m long and stands 15 m above the fosse, locally known as contafossa. The entrance to the fortress is available through Spianada, the famous square of Corfu, which is, in fact, the second largest square in Europe. The entrance is arched and has a Venetian symbol above it, carved in marble. After the entrance, there are two rooms on both sides that now host the Byzantine Collection of Corfu and a gift shop. On the eastern side of the fortress, there is a flatland, used today for cultural events in summer. In this flat square, there is the church of Saint George, built by the Venetians as an ancient temple. This is actually the only church in Greece that has been constructed according to the Doric style. Above this square, there is a cafeteria. For more than four centuries, this fortress had been the symbol of the Venetian occupation in the Ionian islands and today it is one of the most impressive sights on Corfu.
Day 9 Follow the James Bond stories on the isle of Corfu
James Bond was in Corfu, scenes were shot at Spyridon Church – around the alleys and piazzas around the old basilica. The Bond story filmed in Corfu "For Your eyes only" and the scene at St Spyridon goes like this: James Bond (Roger Moore) has to deal with Greek smugglers, who had stolen an important British military device. The trail leads to the Greek island Corfu and young Melina Havelock (Carole Bouquet). Her parents were archaeologists in aide to the British government and got killed. Bond and Melina join forces – and fall in love. In one scene Melina shows Bond the beauty of Kerkira, Corfu’s main town – they walk through the city center around Spyridon Church, shop figs at the market and watch a Greek folklore dance. The other scenes with the Greek dance crew had been filmed at a small square at Nikiforou Theotoki, one of the main souvenir-trapped streets of Kerkira.
Day 10 Experience a local Philharmonic band
The forming of philharmonic orchestras and bands was part of a wider trend which flourished in Europe during the nineteenth century, which saw thousands of music associations founded across the continent. Thanks to their studies at European universities, the Corfiot society, influenced by the European flair of Elite societies, it became part of this musical idiom. The island’s philharmonic bands are particularly famous for their performances during Easter celebrations. For Greeks, Corfu is one of the top destinations for Easter vacations, mainly due to its many unique and colorful Easter traditions.
