Charity Football

Held in September, the “Children First Charity Football Match” was joined by footballers from Laguna Phuket, Banyan Tree Group and Kao Kon La Kao Foundation, the resort’s charity partner. The friendly match raised money for the Children First Fund (CFF) through donations and an auction of Artiwara “Toon” Kongmalai’s football shoes. A philanthropist, Toon is the founder of Kao Kon La Kao Foundation and lead singer of popular Thai rock band "Bodyslam".

Electric Reef

Together with the help of our guests, the Marine Lab at Angsana Ihuru and Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru planted more than 80 corals. The corals were planted on metal structures that had been soaked in seawater and connected to electricity for a week. This process allowed electrolysis to build a layer of calcium on the frame, providing a rough surface for the corals to attach on.

Olive Picking

Commonly used in cooking and sometimes in cosmetics, olive oil plays a huge part in Moroccan culture. On a lazy September afternoon, Banyan Tree Tamouda Bay invited its Guests to harvest olives the Moroccan way. Paired with perfect weather and equipped with long sticks, Guests and Associates gathered on the property’s garden where olive trees are in full bloom. Using the long sticks, olives are struck down from the trees and collected after they have fallen to the ground. As per Moroccan tradition, Associates also sang local folk songs passed down from generations before.

Tech-Education for Children

A partnership with Raja Ali Haji University, Laguna Bintan recently launched “Edutech for Children”, an immersive program where local elementary school students learn analytical thinking and problem solving using computer processes. The aim of this program is to ensure students in remote locations have equal educational opportunities in comparison to their city-dwelling peers. The launch event generated much interest from both local and regional media.

Flood Relief

Heavy rainfall resulted in severe floods in several north-eastern districts of Thailand. Fifteen volunteers from Banyan Tree Bangkok took time off their busy schedule to pack survival bags for the flood victims. Organised by Friend in Need Volunteers Foundation, the event garnered around 1,000 volunteers who successfully packed 8,000 survival bags.
