Banyan Tree was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development. We employ an integrated and participatory approach, to minimize our impact while safeguarding and enhancing the human and physical environment for present and future generations.
As stewards of responsible tourism, we have conceptualized our values in our “Brand for Good” framework to go beyond the precautionary approach and inspire exceptional experiences among our guests to “embrace the environment and empower people” at each of our locations.
Plastic-Free Banyan Tree
Our resort is committed to our brand-wide pledge to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastics from our operations, as part of our continued effort to directly address the detrimental effect that plastic is having on the environment and marine life. In our first year, we as a Group managed to eliminate over 25% of targeted single-use plastic, meaning 1 in 4 of these items used will no longer be sent to landfill or end up polluting our environment.
Angsana Xishuabanna is committed to play a part in energy conservation and emission reduction. 80%-90% of the hotel grounds use LED light. Every night, Associates from the Security department patrols the hotel and turn off unnecessary lights. This daily ritual at work follows them home, encouraging them to turn off the lights whenever they can and reduce overall electricity consumption.
Greening Communities Together
Our aim is to restore the natural environment, whilst raising awareness of climate change through tree-planting events, around the area in which we operate, with a current target of 2,000 trees per year. In the first ten years we planted almost half a million trees, and we aim to plant 25,000 during our 25th anniversary year.
Supporting Local Communities
Every Saturday, Angsana Xishuangbanna organises English classes for children on public welfare. Through interactive lessons and engaging activities, the property pays special attention to make learning English fun. Their efforts were not in vain. Well-received by the kids and local communities, the class enjoys positive attendance numbers week after week.
Angsana Xishuangbanna organized a fun baking class for children and parents of the local communities. Choosing from two different flavours, chocolate or cream, kids learnt directly from the hotel’s chef and got hands-on with baking cookies. From ingredient mixing to dough rolling, participating families enjoyed their time together. With the success of this event, Angsana Xishuangbanna looks forward to recreating similar experiences for its communities in the future.
We aim to organize a minimum of four cleaning activities each year, to engage members of the local community, our guests and our associates with the need for effective waste management and to promote responsible consumption of resources and maintaining a healthy environment.
Angsana Xishuangbanna held its inaugural Earth Hour event with the theme of “Embracing Nature and Returning to Self”. Sitting comfortably in a circle and surrounded by warm candlelight, guests came together for a special Himalayan-bowl meditation activity. In darkness and serenity, participants were asked to relax and observe mindfulness on how to protect the earth.
World Earth Day
Can you imagine a vegetable garden made out of tires? Angsana Xishuangbanna did just that. Equipped with colourful paint and various seeds, Guests and Associates of the property decorated unwanted tires and transformed them into mini gardens. With sunshine, water, and the right amount of care, these mini gardens will grow and bring a new season to Angsana Xishuangbanna.
Daily Tai Chi
After breakfast every morning, guests gather at the outdoor patio to practice tai-chi. Hoping to spread the concept of wellbeing to its guests, this daily activity is organised by Angsana Xishuangbanna. When practiced quietly and slowly, one can feel the rhythmic waves of the surrounding air. A gentle practice, tai-chi is encouraged for all age groups.
