With rapid globalisation, the sense of adventure and discovery once found in travel no longer occurs as naturally as it once did. Finding a place untouched by modernization and rapid development, is even rarer.
At least, till you travel to one of Southeast Asia’s least explored - and most delightful - ancient cities, Luang Prabang in Laos. Forgotten by the world until only recently, you’ll find something magical about this former royal capital and designated UNESCO World Heritage Site; the moment you step into the city, life slows down as the authentic unhurried charm of traditional Asian life takes over. In a township marked by restful ambience and tranquility, it‘s a joy to make your passage through narrow alleys, glittering temples and evocative colonial buildings on foot.
Bordered by mountains at the fork of the Mekong and its tributary the Khan River, standing at Luang Prabang’s centre is Mount Phousi, from where one can take in breathtaking views of the surrounding temples and hills. In a city where time seems to stand still, a UNESCO plan is in place to keep it that way. This includes the limiting of new buildings and development in keeping with this magical place.
