In addition, the Mauritian government decided to transform this coastal region into an environmentally-sensitive oasis and protected marina that it is today.
History of the site
Part of a French fortification compound in the 18th century, during the Anglo-French naval wars, Balaclava is an ancient site which was the naval base for French troops fighting off British invaders off the coast of Mauritius. Finally, as history unfolded, it was the British who captured the island of Isle-de-France, re-named Mauritius in 1810.
